RESOLUTION BY IUPAT LOCAL 10 PROTESTING FEDERAL TARGETING OF MINNEAPOLIS LABOR AND COMMUNITY ACTIVISTS Whereas workers here in Portland and throughout the U.S. have been greatly inspired by the courageous resistance of Minnesota working people to the violent repression and occupation of the Twin Cities by ICE and the Border Patrol, and Whereas earlier this month the AFL-CIO’s convention, meeting in Minneapolis, awarded Minnesota’s labor movement for its members’ actions during the anti-immigrant “Operation Metro Surge,” with the AFL-CIO’s president stating: “This year, our Minnesota union brothers, sisters and siblings showed us the best of the labor movement,” and Whereas yesterday, Tuesday June 16, after federal agents carried out a wave of raids and arrests, the U.S. Department of Justice indicted 15 Minnesota trade unionists and community activists on bogus “conspiracy” charges, in an obvious act of vengeance against the mass protests in Minneapolis earlier this year, seeking to cow and silence all labor and all opponents of anti-worker, anti-immigrant and racist repression, and Whereas amid a slew of other allegations, “the indictment cited some of the individuals’ participation in assemblies of trade unionists and other workers held at the United Labor Centre in Minneapolis as evidence” that the activists had supposedly participated in a “criminal conspiracy” (Workday Magazine, June 16), a sinister logic by which almost any unionist anywhere could be framed up on bogus charges for attending labor movement meetings, and Whereas Minnesota AFL-CIO President Bernie Burnham stated yesterday: “This past winter, the Trump administration tried to break Minnesotans’ solidarity and basic sense of decency by flooding our state with armed agents. They failed. Now they are trying to break us in the courtroom. They will fail again,” and Whereas unionists in Minnesota have called for solidarity from the rest of labor against the attempt to intimidate us all and strip away our most basic rights, and Whereas workers in Portland have gone through a federal occupation and experienced all kinds of attempts to stop the working class from defending basic rights against the bosses and all manner of anti-worker, divide-and-rule, bigoted and repressive forces, and Whereas the attack on our fellow workers in Minnesota is an attack on our rights, too and the rights of all labor, therefore Be it resolved that International Union of Painters and Allied Trades Local 10 demands that all charges be immediately dropped against the Minnesota activists, and Resolved that we call on the rest of the Portland and Oregon labor movement to demand this as well; and Resolved that this resolution be immediately published and communicated to the Minnesota and national labor movement. Whereas agents of the U.S. government arrested Mahmoud Khalil in New York City on Saturday, March 8, took him from his pregnant wife, and are holding him in a prison in Louisiana and are threatening to deport him from the U.S., and

Whereas Khalil is a legal permanent resident of the United States, and

Whereas Donald Trump and officials of his government have stated that Khalil is the “first of many” such legal residents they intend to deport, and

Whereas according to the government’s own statements, Khalil was arrested and his Green Card revoked as retaliation for his role as a spokesperson for student protests at Columbia University against the ongoing U.S. sponsored genocide of the Palestinian people, and

Whereas the arrest of Khalil and the threats of deportations of pro-Palestinian student protesters are an offense against everyone’s fundamental rights to freedom of speech and association, rights that are essential to our organization, therefore

Resolution To Defend Immigrants Against Mass Deportations and Racist Violence Whereas, Trump’s planned immigration raids have stoked racist, anti-immigrant violence, and Whereas, this goes together with his praise of billionaire Elon Musk’s strike-breaking, his stoking of divide-and-conquer bigotry and encouragement of violent far-right groups, and Whereas, immigrant workers are a central part of labor, vital to our labor organizations, and their rights are inseparable from those of the rest of the working class, and Whereas, a union is a self-defense organization for the working class as a whole, and Whereas, attacks either from the government or from groups of racist thugs pose a danger to workers everywhere, and Whereas, we cannot look to the government, the courts, politicians of either big-business party, or the police to protect immigrants from bigoted attacks, and Whereas, it is the duty of the unions to defend our fellow workers against oppression and racist attacks, and Whereas, an injury to one is an injury to all, Therefore, be it resolved that IUPAT Local 10 will mobilize its membership to defend immigrants who are under attack either from government raids or racist groups, and Be it further resolved that this body repudiates the vile attacks on immigrants and calls for the rest of labor to mobilize in defense of our fellow workers. WHEREAS every day now we are seeing the horrifying bombing and massive killing of the working people of Gaza and their families with arms supplied by the same U.S. government that carries out strike breaking against workers here. Over 37,000, including at least 15,000 children, have already been killed and the death toll grows higher day by day while millions more suffer from displacement and starvation. WHEREAS working-class opposition to this U.S./Israel war goes hand in hand with the labor motto, "An injury to one is an injury to all." WHEREAS working-class opposition to this U.S./Israel war goes and in hand with the Labor motto, “An injury to one is an injury to all” as well as the call, “Arab, Jewish, black and white, workers of the world unite.” THEREFORE be it resolved that Ironworkers Local 29 supports the Palestinian trade unions’ call for labor everywhere to stop the shipment of arms for this U.S./Israel war; that we salute dock and transport workers in Barcelona, Belgium, Italy, and elsewhere who have stated their refusal to handle arms shipments for this war; and that we support and encourage efforts for such workers’ actions here in the U.S. to stop the arms shipments; and be it further resolved that, opposing what is in effect yet another U.S. war, this time against the people of Gaza; we call for the immediate end to Israel’s bombing of Gaza; for Israel to vacate Gaza and the West Bank, and to end all arming and funding for it now.

During the last regularly scheduled meeting of the Ironworkers Local #29 general membership, held on Dec. 7, 2023, the following resolution was put to vote and passed:

WHEREAS solidarity with workers everywhere is a crucial part of labor unionism, and the workers’ struggle has no borders.

WHEREAS every day now we are seeing the horrifying bombing and massive killing of the working people of Gaza and their children with arms supplied by the same U.S. government that carries out strike breaking against workers here. With over 16,000 already killed and the death toll slated to grow higher day by day.
